Aquitaine
The summer had been soft and gentle the breezes blowing in off the Bay of Biscay made this area almost perfect, in the summer; they had travelled vast distances making sure the local nobles knew to whom their allegiance was owed.
This area was rife with revolt and attempts at independence and with Normandy and Brittany now a physical barrier to England the likelihood of a local movement to separate for independence or join completely with France was even more likely.
Simon and Edward enjoyed the many and varied wines of the regions and the revenue from the vast amount of trade with England with ships leaving daily from Bordeaux heavily laden.
Most of the French and English aristocracy married purely to have legal children to inherit vast estates but their social lives were almost entirely in the company of other men even from a very early age, they put on this public face of the great military and brutal face but in private it was completely the opposite.
The bedroom was warm and comforting as a great fire roared in the grate.
âThis land is getting cold will winter be damp and windy here Simon?â
âUnfortunately yes not as damp as England but this is the wettest and windiest in all France it comes roaring in off the sea and the mountains to the south are covered in snow, everywhere floods, rivers burst their banks and so muddy horses will be wallowing in the tracks.â
âNot a pleasant place then, can we go somewhere else when the weather turns?â
âPoitiers is in the middle not perfect but we can enjoy more company, we can keep warm together.â
âI have been in touch with other magnates in England they are equally disturbed with your fathers handling of the affairs of state, so incompetent at warfare and diplomacy all at the same time.â
âYour spiritual friend is he powerful enough to help us overthrow my father?â
âHe is powerful in our terms but there are others who can defeat him that is why we came south to give us time.â
âSo what happens when we return to England?â
âI have asked for more power to be allocated to us, it seems they are destroying other parts of the world and we are not high in their priority list, but we can achieve great things together nephew.â
âFirst England then we take over France with my families support what a power we would be then, the low countries then Denmark we are all linked by the sea and many of our families are linked by blood, next year we can then call a parliament that will embarrass your father.â
âYou know how to manipulate people and with your skill on the battlefield we can definitely win.â
